One of the most important collections of pheasants and relatives in Europe.
Pheasants and relatives (Phasianidae) are a family of birds in the order Galliformes, which includes chickens, pheasants, turkeys, partridges and other ground-dwelling birds. They are generally sturdy, with wings that are short in proportion to their bodies and showy colouring; they are not suited to long-distance flight. They are seed-eaters and supplement their diet with insects. There are 177 species in 46 genera.
The males have far showier plumage than the females. The females, by contrast, have duller, less distinct colouring, a mix of brown and grey feathers; they look after the nests and the chicks, and they are somewhat smaller than the males.
Zoo Koki is home to one of the most important collections in Europe:
We have been working intensively with these species for more than 25 years. In order to provide information and share experiences, we have created a website dedicated to the pheasants of the world: faisanesdelmundo.com. The aims of this work focus on the classification, study and dissemination of the current status of pheasants, both in captivity and in their natural habitat.
