The Cactarium

The Cactarium

A collection of more than 120 cacti from over 80 species from different parts of the world.

A cactarium is a specialised garden, or an area within a botanical garden, devoted to collections of cacti. Cacti are succulent plants native to the Americas, typical of arid environments; they need dry conditions, which is why in many countries collections are kept in greenhouses that protect them from the rain. Cactariums also often house plants from other botanical families native to the world's desert regions.

We are working on adding photos of the following species to this section. Other species that are also part of the collection: Echinopsis oxygona · Ferocactus horridus · Aloe dichotoma · Turbinicarpus pseudopectinatus · Larryleachia cactiformis · Pilosocereus leucocephalus · Crassula ovata · Echeveria elegans · Kalanchoe blossfeldiana · Lampranthus · Carpobrotus edulis · Rhipsalis · Epiphyllum · Sansevieria · Pereskia · Lophophora diffusa.

And so on, up to 120 cacti from more than 80 species from different parts of the world, in an initial collection that we hope will gradually grow.

Visit us and you will also be able to learn a little more about the plants belonging to this group known as “succulents”. Succulent or fleshy plants (from the Latin suculentus, “very juicy”) are those in which some organ or part has been modified into a new specialisation that allows it to store water in much greater quantities than other plants.
