A bird of prey, or raptor, is a bird that hunts prey for food, using its beak and sharp talons. Its talons and beak tend to be relatively large, powerful and adapted for tearing and/or piercing flesh.
The term โraptorโ derives from the Latin word rapere, meaning โto seizeโ or โto take by forceโ. Many bird species can be considered partly or exclusively predatory; however, in ornithology the term โbird of preyโ applies only to birds of the families listed below.
